This is an incredible book on the psychology and philosophy of what it means to be a man. So much of the way our culture (and many others) think of masculinity centers on its toxic aspects. We lionize the immature, adolescent, and shadow forms of the masculine - the bully, the seducer, the manipulator, the tyrant. We idolize superficial status, wealth, and power as what will make us happy. These attitudes at best are adolescent stages to be grown out of, and at worst are destructive perversions of our masculine energy.This book will offer you an alternative grounded in the richest experiences of men through the ages. It will make clear to you the archetypes that are already embedded in your soul - King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover. It will teach you how to transcend the immaturity you may still cling to and access the creativity, strength, wisdom, and love that men were born to live out.Personal growth is a lifelong battle we all have to fight, and I've found this book a valuable ally in becoming more of the man I want to be.
The book was on a required reading list on "Breaking BUD/S". No fool! BUD/S not buds as in dope........duh. Basis Underwater Demolition/SEALS.But I digress for the sake of levity. King, Warrior is a fascinating book dealing with the male psyche and how we mature from boys to men. We as men develop with a primary archetype but eventually encompass all four archetypes. The authors also detail what I call the "contra" or disordered archetype. Most men will readily see themselves defined both as boys or adolescents and then as men. I certainly could pick out my personalityI also highly recommend the book to women who have been or are currently in a heterosexual relationship. Guys, if you think women are difficult to understand...............well the female gender does not have "an exclusive" on this. Plus really, the goal of every human on the planet should be getting along with others and to do that you have to understand yourself. Identifying the real issue is halfway to solving it.
I recently broke up with my girlfriend of three years. Knowing that the reason for the breakup was mostly my fault, I began to seek answers and turn a new leaf. This book helped align my psyche as a man and push me into the right direction. My shadow warrior will no longer have control over my life. King, Warrior, Magician, Lover is a must read for your modern day man.
This book was recommended to me by a good friend who is a retired Captain, USMC, USNA graduate and published author. Knowing about my Jungian way of processing, he knew I would enjoy it. This work is well written, highly Jungian in its analysis of the four male archetypes. Years ago I read Patrick Arnold's "Wildmen, Warriors and Kings", the work the revealed to me my Warrior archetype. "King, Warrior, Magician, Lover" is contemporary and applicable even today, 25 years after it was written. Moore's introduction of the "Shadow" side of each archetype lifts up Jung's focus on the duality of types. I would have given this work 5 stars, but 4 is the best I can do for it. I encourage anyone interested in learning about the in-depth analysis of these four archetypes to give it a careful read. It has wide application, even 25 years after it was written.
Very clear writing. A combination of isoteric with very archetypical ideas that resonate with any body easily. It acts as a type of catalyst for retrospection in your own life, giving you a new lens to view the reality of what it means to not only be a mature man, but also a complete human being. The lessons here, I say are universal, and when i read it, it really echoes where todays society actually amplifies, neglects, and exacerbates these issues that go on unspoken about. This book is originally from the 1990s, when this spiritual movement began, but as I read this in 2018 i think we are in desperate need to heed the lessons of the past in order to properly conduct yourself in the future as Jordan Peterson once said.
This was published in 1990. The social problems it documents are even worse now than they were when it was written.Boys these days have no healthy role models, or any rites of passage. They're starved for Strong, Wise, Nourishing Masculinity. Also, as the book observed, Feminists have Demonized Masculinity itself. They don't see any value in Masculinity, all they see is it's weaknesses or it's shadow side.The Shadow Sides of Masculinity are the Tyrant, the Sadist, the Manipulator, and the Sex Addict. These are the examples most boys are left with. The ones who don't become those are left without a reason to believe in anything. They become the Weaklings, the Masochists, and the Impotent.Either way countless Boys are without any ideas of what Maturity is, much less Healthy Role models for Mature-Masculinity.This book has powerful insight into the Male Psyche. It uses the Archetypes of King, Warrior, Magician and Lover. Then gives powerful examples of each. These 4 are the essence of the Role Models boys need. It goes on to explain how even those who never had any Wise Elders can use Biographies, Documentaries and the books written by the Wise to build healthy Archetypes.The world needs this book even more now than when it was published.
